EIN Numbers- How to Get Online
The U.S. Internal Revenue Service issues Employer Identification Numbers (EIN), also known as a Tax Identification Number. The EIN is used to identify a business or an individual who conducts certain transactions. There is no charge to apply for an EIN. The IRS recommends checking to find out if your state requires a similar state number.
Here are the tips:
1. Determine if you are eligible to use the online EIN Number application process. Individuals whose legal residence is in the U.S. or its territories may use the online application. Also eligible to use the online application are organizations whose principal business, office or agency is in the United States or its territories.
2. Have the appropriate valid Taxpayer Identification Number: Social Security Number, Employer Identification Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. The number is required to complete the online EIN application.
3. Go to the IRS website and click on "Apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) Online." The online EIN application is available 6 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. Monday through Friday; 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays and 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. Sundays EST.
4. Click the "Apply Online Now" link near the bottom of the page, which takes you to the EIN Assistant page. Read the instructions and restrictions, including those related to foreign businesses or those incorporated outside of the United States. Note that the application must be completed in one session, and that a third-party designee completing the application for a taxpayer must have authorization from the taxpayer.
5. Begin the application process by clicking "Begin Application." The next few pages require you to enter information or answer questions. Each of the pages has help topics to guide you through the process. The first page asks you to select your legal structure type, which includes corporations, partnerships and others. The next page asks for the reason you are applying for an EIN and the following page requires you to enter identifying information, including name and social security number.
6. Answer all remaining questions. The EIN is issued immediately after the application is completed and the information provided is validated. Print your EIN number confirmation and instructions or save it to your computer.
